Wynell Kopchak is an enrolled member of the Iipay Nation of Santa Ysabel in California and serves as the Director of Family Advocacy for Acorns to Oak Trees. As a mother of four daughters who have each gone through the special education system, Wynell brings both personal and professional experience to her work, supporting families of children with diverse learning needs and disabilities. She has successfully navigated the IEP process for all four of her children and understands firsthand the challenges families face in accessing appropriate educational support.
Wynell is certified in Special Education Advocacy through the University of San Diego School of Law’s Advocacy Program, where she deepened her knowledge of educational rights, IEP processes, and systemic support strategies. With a focus on collaboration, equity, and informed advocacy, she helps parents gain the tools and confidence needed to effectively partner with schools and service providers. Her work is grounded in empathy, education, and a strong commitment to inclusion for all students.
She has also completed specialized training in culturally responsive education and Native family engagement, including:
- Working Effectively with American Indian and Alaska Native Tribal Governments
- Ensuring Excellence and Equitable Learning for All American Indian Students: Native Family and Tribal Community Engagement Series
- Title VI Indian Education
In addition, Wynell served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for San Diego County, supporting the rights and well-being of children in foster care.
As a Native woman, Wynell is deeply passionate about empowering Native families and believes in the potential of every child. Through her advocacy, she works to ensure that all children are supported, valued, and given every opportunity to thrive.
